Seven Lions, the visionary dubstep producer, born Jeff Montalvo on March 31, 1987, in Santa Barbara, California, has emerged as a prominent figure in the Electronic Dance Music industry. Under his professional stage name, Seven Lions, Jeff has carved out a distinguished path, transforming electronic music into works of delicate and ethereal beauty.
Jeff's journey into the world of music production began at a tender age, ignited by his father's introduction of a Macintosh and keyboard when he was just seven years old. Raised as a drummer with a penchant for metal and punk, he transitioned into electronic music production as a means to create music independently. His passion for electronic music was ignited when a friend introduced him to the program Fruity Loops, setting the stage for his remarkable career.
Despite producing electronic music, Jeff's musical influences extend beyond the electronic realm. As a fan of Viking metal and bands like Opeth, his creative reservoir draws from diverse sources. "I don't listen to electronic music regularly; I still listen to metal honestly," he admits. "I like stuff that really takes you out of somewhere you are and puts you somewhere else."
Jeff's breakthrough in the dance music world came with his contest-winning remix of Above & Beyond's "You Got To Go," propelling him into the spotlight. This track soared to #2 on Beatport's Dubstep chart, standing just behind Skrillex's remix of Avicii's "Levels." This accomplishment caught the attention of Above & Beyond, leading to future collaborations.
In 2011, Jeff also released captivating remixes for tracks like Florence and the Machine's "Cosmic Love" and Oceanlab's "Satellite." His debut Polarize EP under Viper Recordings in April earned several Beatport #1s, solidifying his position as a dubstep force to be reckoned with.
A pivotal moment in his career occurred when Jeff's management team, Golden Ratio Management, introduced his demos to Skrillex. Impressed by the tracks, Skrillex personally reached out to sign his future EP. In October 2012, Jeff unveiled his "Days to Come" EP on Skrillex's OWSLA imprint, achieving remarkable success with a #2 position on the US iTunes Dance Charts and a #1 ranking on Beatport.
As Jeff's star continued to rise, he garnered support from revered DJs such as Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, and Gareth Emery. He embarked on a journey of headlining venues across the United States, including Avalon Hollywood and Webster Hall New York City. Major festivals like SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival in New York, Global Dance Festival, and Camp Bisco all welcomed his electrifying performances.
Throughout his journey, Jeff treated fans to exceptional releases like "Fevers" and "Serpent of Old," two new singles for OWSLA. He also ventured into official remixes, including Röyksopp's "Running to the Sea."
In 2013, Seven Lions joined Porter Robinson's Circle Assembly tour as the main support, further cementing his status as an electronic music powerhouse. Collaborations with Myon & Shane 54 and Tove Lo led to the creation of "Strangers," featured on the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones OST.
In April 2014, Jeff released the "Worlds Apart" EP on Casablanca Records, featuring tracks like "Don't Leave" with Ellie Goulding and "Worlds Apart" with Kerli. This release showcased a diverse range of genres, including trance, dubstep, bass music, and electro, all while emphasizing songwriting over pure dance-floor aggression.
Seven Lions continues to inspire and enchant listeners with his groundbreaking productions, pushing the boundaries of electronic music and captivating audiences worldwide.
